Society for Open Nepal (SFON), a non-profit organization based in the US, contributed a sum of Rs. 1 Lakh to the ‘Janaandolan Swastha Upachar Kosh’, to aid the victims of current political movement in Nepal, a April 26 press release said. “The proceeds will be utilized to help those injured in the mass movement, who are in urgent need of medical care and treatment at this critical moment,” statement added.

SFON (www.opennepal.org) is a dynamic result-oriented organization with a mission to provide impetus in transforming Nepal into a knowledge-based digital economy. Through its chapters, it works to initiate and assist sound education programs, and is also geared to support social causes in Nepal.

In line with its vision, SFON has been involved in supporting education projects as well as various awareness and interactive discussion programs, which it believes is a fundamental way to educate today’s youth. In 2005, SFON worked in partnership with Solukhumbu community members to establish a high school computer center in order to help students with computer education. In 2004, it organized a three-day Computer Olympiad with an objective to generate technology awareness and to get students to interact, compete, and learn. The program, inaugurated by the then Prime Minister, Mr. Sher Bahadur Debua, SFON Honorary Chair, was not only highly successful in achieving its intended goals, but highly appreciated by the participants. SFON has also been involved with organizing youth media forums and elocution competitions to further its mission. This year, it plans to establish a scholarship fund to assist need-based talented students.
