At a program organized on Oct 23rd, 2005 at the premises of Jana Jagriti Madhyamik vidhyalaya, Salleri VDC of Solukhumbu, Society For Open Nepal donated five computers to the school. The computers were bought with the help of money collected from the Sherpa community residing in New York . The principal of Jana Jagriti Madhyamik Vidhyalaya, Mr. Prem Rai, received the computers. The program was presided over by the members of the school management committee, a foreign visitor Kate Rowland and some members of the donor club and attended by all the students and few other local honoraries.

It is obvious that the knowledge of computers has become absolutely necessary to remain competitive even at small jobs. To remain aloof from the technology is not an action of will but an action of compulsion because of remoteness and lack of funds to afford such amenity. Therefore to improve education sector among many others, SFON decided to help students of remote Phaplu by co-coordinating the computer donation program with the funding from Sherpas of Salleri and Phaplu. In order to make the students aware of the need and use of computers in today’s world, the club managed to integrate five more computers to their already established computer room with only two functioning computers. In sheer jubilation the principal of the school Mr. Prem Rai promised to make the most of it to produce computer literate students.

As there are no computer teachers available in the school, the computer donation program also includes arranging and financing for the training of two teachers from the school in Kathmandu. With only twelve teachers allocated by the district Education committee for the entire school, it had it’s own share of owes. With only seven commuters for more than five hundred students from grade eight to ten, it would not be wise to teach the SLC curriculum. Therefore, the school has decided to give basic computer courses to all the students in their extra time after the school hours, which will add to the benefit of the students.
