To support students affected by the 10-year conflict, the Society For Open Nepal, (SFON), Budhanilkantha Chapter, has initiated an annual scholarship program for grade nine students. The scholarships will be awarded on a need-based basis to students affected by the armed conflict and support their education until the completion of SLC examinations.
SFON (www.opennepal.org), a non-profit based in the US, founded by two Cisco Systems employees, Sujit Thapa & Dipesh Shrestha. The organization seeks to provide impetus to transform Nepal to a knowledge-based digital society. Through its Kathmandu and Budhanilkantha Chapters, SFON has been actively involved on projects on education, technology, and social programs.
Last year, SFON established an educational package to Rukum, a package that included computers, scholarships and books, and has been continually supported since then. In April 2006, SFON provided funds to victims of the historic people’s movement against the King’s dictatorial rule. In 2005, SFON partnered with locals to set up a computer lab and offer computer classes in a high school in Solkhumbu.
